Nikon Announced the Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera and will have the camera available for sale December 2006 just in time for the holiday blitz. It looks like the perfect camera for the consumer or photographer looking for something more out of their regular point-and-shoot camera. Don’t expect a lot of pro dials and widgets on this camera, they are going for simplicity. It has a very simple shooting mode and nearly naked back on the camera, in comparison to the D50, D80 and D200. They’ve made the D40 smaller, by eliminating the top LCD monitor, see image comparison below. It’s also very light, just over 16 ounces in weight.

The Back of the camera has been simplified slightly, not as many buttons, which can make it less confusioning to the beginner.

Nikon has really stepped up their efforts in bringing the Power of Digital SLR cameras to the consumer. The price is pretty sweet and the quality of the camera is comparable to the D50 and D70. Of course it will be dumbed down, I mean simplified, to make it easier for the consumer.
Because they’ve eliminated the top LCD monitor with information on the settings you’ve selected, they’ve added that info into the Menu, viewable on the big 2.5inch Color LCD monitor on the back. Nikon calls it the: “Nikon’s new visually-intuitive information display system”.

I bought a D40 and a 18-200 VR zoom yesterday, and have fallen in love with this pairing. This is my first digital SLR, but not my first digital camera. I have used Nikon film cameras for 35 years.
The D40 feels good in my hand, and the menu system is the best I have seen to date. The 18-200 VR lens is remarkable and easily replaces 4 lenses in my older system.
This lens and camera, along with a Sigma 10-20 should make the ideal traveling set-up for me.
Keep up the good work.

Just an update after a few months of ownership.
If this camera is not flawless, it certainly is close to it. I have nothing but praise for the way it handles and the picture quality. We like it so much, I just bought a second D40 with the 70-300 VR lens for my wife to use for bird photography!

Guys.. D40 is a good nikon hard work for designing camera. Now i pairing my D40 with 18-105mm VR Lens ex. D90 Kit its works really good as my other lens companion is 12-14mm F1.4 as partner.
Cheers NIKON!!!!
